Clear Lake Symphony

2011 Youth Concerto Competition Winners

The Clear Lake Symphony held a competition on January 8, 2011  for young artists from Houston Metro area high schools, junior highs, and elementary schools. 
The Youth Concerto Competition winners will be provided with a scholarship and perform as a featured soloist with the Clear Lake Symphony at the March 18, 2011 concert.  Thirty four (34) participants participated in this year's competition.
 

Junior Wind Division

Cameron Hildebrand (Flute) Winner, "Sonata for Flute, 2nd & 3rd mvts.", by Poulenc.  Age 14 in the 8th grade and is home schooled.  Son of Timothy & Susan Hildebrand.  Cameron has studied flute for 3 years. Teacher: Norma Williams.  Cameron is in the Bay Area Youth Symphony and the Pearland Community Band.  He enjoys tennis, ping-pong and canoeing.  Cameron is active in his church's youth group.  Cameron participates in flute ensembles coordinated by his music teacher, Norma Williams.

Junior Piano Division


Patrick Pan
(Piano) Co-Winner, "Piano Concerto No.17 in G, K453, 1st mvt." by Mozart.  Age 12, graduated from Westbrook Intermediate School in May 2010. Son of Dr. and Mrs. Y.S. Pan.  Patrick is pursuing his interests in science, music, math and computer science as a homeschooled student.  He plans to attend Clear Lake High School in the fall of 2011.  Patrick started playing piano at three and violin at seven.  Music Teachers: John Weems (piano) and Henry Rubin (violin).

In addition to music, Patrick's academic achievements include: First Place and Grand Prize of the Houston Regional Science Fair and the 2010 Texas State MATHCOUNTS Championship.  He finished many AP courses like Calculus and represented the USA at the 2010 World Mathematics Team Championship.  Patrick also won the Saving Texas History essay contest in 2009.  He founded his school's computer club and enjoys computer programming. He enjoys continually enhancing his computer and helping others with their computer issues.

Patrick participates in the Board of Directors of Houston Medical Museum and studies genetics at Baylor College of Medicine.  He plans to becomes a geneticist and study law. Duke University's Talent Identification Program has published two articles on Patrick's academic pursuits. He plays tennis and enjoys chess (State Prize) and writing applications for his cell phone.

Daniel Whatley
(Piano) Co-Winner, "Piano Concerto No.1 in C, op. 15, 1st mvt." by Beethoven.  Age 11 in the 5h grade and is home schooled.  Son of Bill and Jingda Whatley. Daniel studied piano for 6 years.  Music Teacher: D. Darius Pawlas.  Daniel used his music talent to help others by participating as one of the organizers and performers of a fundraising concert for the Hurricane Morakot victims in Southeast Asia in 2009.  He loves math and practices tennis.  He is presently in the US Tennis Association in which he is the Tennis Champion in the 12 and under category.

Melissa Du (Violin) Winner, "Symphonie Espagnole, Op. 21, 1st mvt.", by Lalo.  Age 14 in the 9th grade at Cyprus Fall High School.  Daughter of Xiangyang Du and Linna Zhang.  Melissa has studied violin for 7 years.  Music teacher: Eric Halen.  Melissa  enjoys doing volunteer work through her school, participating competitively in Science Olympiad and speech/debate tournaments, surfing the Internet, watching good news and spending time with friends.

Senior String Division

Charles Seo (Cello) Co-Winner, "Cello Concerto in E minor, op. 85, 4th mvt.." by Elgar.  He is in the 9th grade at Memorial High School.  He began playing cello when he first came to the United States which was less than 6 years ago.  Music teacher: Dr. Brinton Smith.  Charles has been a member of the Houston Youth Symphony for 6 years and is the principal cellist of the Symphony. In the summer of 2009, he attended the Madeline Island Music Camp and subsequently was invited to perform for the Garden of Music Concert in Minnesota. Charles was also invited by the West Houston Assistance Ministries to perform in a concert as a special guest performer with the Houston Civic Symphony. Outside of playing his cello, Charles enjoys playing the saxophone and guitar.

Andrew Shiau (Cello) Co-Winner, "Cello Concerto in E minor, op. 85, 1st & 2nd mvts." by Elgar.  Age 15 in the 10th grade at Jersey Village High School.  Son of Dennis and Meilih Shiau.  Andrew studied cello for 4 years.  Music teacher: Cornelia Watkins.  Andrew's hobbies and interests include: reading and listening to classical music.
