Clear Lake Symphony


2015 Youth Concerto Competition Winners

The Clear Lake Symphony held a competition on Saturday, January 24, 2015  for young artists from Houston Metro area high schools, junior highs, and elementary schools. 
The Youth Concerto Competition winners will be provided with a scholarship and perform as a featured soloist with the Clear Lake Symphony at the Friday, March 27, 2015 concert at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church at 18220 Upper Bay Road, in Nassau Bay.  A total of thirty three (33)  participants participated in this year's competition.
 

Junior Wind Division

Samuel James (bassoon) Winner, "Concert Piece", by Berwald.  Age 15 in the 9th grade at Clear Falls High School.  Samuel is the son of  Stephen James & Beth Weilder.  Samuel has studied bassoon for 4 ˝ years.  Music teacher: Robyn Watson. Sam's hobbies are playing bassoon, band, and playing video and computer games with friends.  His favorite class in school, after band, is his engineering design class.  As of this point, Sam has not decided what to do with the "rest of his life", but the bassoon will be a large part of it.

Senior Wind Division

Adrian Falco (saxophone), "Fantasia", by Claude T. Smith.  Age 17 in the 12th grade at Friendswood High School.  Adrian is the son of Michael and Hong Falco.  Studied saxophone for 6 years.  Music teachers: Dan Gelok, Johnny Salinas and Bob Eason.  Adrian enjoys cycling, jogging and swimming.  He also enjoyed participating in the Friendswood High School Marching Band and being section leader of the saxophone section.

Musical Achievements:

ˇ TMEA All-State Musician on Alto Saxophone (2013, 2014, 2015)
ˇ Judges Choice and 1st Place Winner in American Protégé International Brass and Woodwind Competition (2014)

Junior Piano Division


John Cao
(piano) Winner, "Piano Concerto No. 2, 1st mvt." by Beethoven.  Age 14, in the 9h grade at Manvel High School. John is the son of Qirong Cao and Rong Shen.  John studied piano for 10 years.  Music teacher: John Weems.  John's interests other than piano are: choir, figure skating, swimming and math.  His ambitions are to study both ophthalmology and piano in college.  John loves doing volunteer work for his church.

Musical Achievements:
ˇ HMTA Piano Contest, 1st place (2013 - 2014)
ˇ HYAC Artist (2012 - 2016)
ˇ Finalist in TMTA - 7th & 8th grade

Senior Piano Division

David Li (piano) Winner, "Piano Concerto in A minor, 1st mvt.", by Grieg.  Age 16 in the 11th grade at Klein Collins High School.  David is the son of Qingzhou Li and Yu Shen.  He studied piano for 9 years.  Music teacher: John Weems. In addition to classical music, David enjoys all kinds of music and playing basket ball.  He is an active member of the Math club, HOSA and DECA.  Along with a very rigorous class schedule of six AP classes this year, David is ranked first in his class of 813.  He plans to major in medical science.

James Biak (cello) Winner, "Cello Concerto No. 1, 1st mvt.", by Saint-Saens.  Age 13 in the 8th grade at Garland McMeans Juniors High School.  James is the son of John and Youngsook Baik.  Studied cello for 5 years.  Music Teacher: Christopher French.  James enjoys playing tennis and basketball and exploring technology.

Musical Achievements:
ˇ Member of TMEA Region 23 Junior High Symphony Orchestra (2012, 2013, 2014)
ˇ Houston Young Artist (2015)
ˇ 1st place, Houston Civic Symphony Concerto Competition (2015)

Senior String Division

Jiakai Pan (violin) Winner, "Violin Concerto, 1st mvt." by Barber.  Age 15 in the 10th grade at Bellaire High School.  Jiakai is the son of Jen-Jung Pan and Chaoru Chen. He studied violin for 8 years.  Music teacher: Kenneth Goldsmith. Jiakai interests are creative writing and computer gaming.  His hobbies include reading and listening to music.  Jiakai 's ambition is to have a lifelong interest in classical music.
